Escape Room Tips for First Time Players

by Spellbound Escapes | Jan 23, 2019 | Gamemaster's Grimoire

The number one question we get from players looking for advice before they get into the room is: “So, how do we win?” I usually answer with some pithy joke: “Oh, I’m not falling for that one again,” or perhaps the obvious, “Get out of the room.” But the truth...

My husband and I did the post-apocalyptic escape room at Foxwoods and had such a great time! This was my first ever escape room experience and it completely exceeded my expectations.First off, the atmosphere when you walk in is amazing. It’s inside the Tanger Outlets, but once you enter it feels like stepping into a completely different world. The décor and setup are so cool — we even stopped to take pictures together because everything looked so unique and well designed. The place was also very clean, which I appreciated. The host was super friendly and accommodating. We showed up only about 10 minutes before a game was starting and they were still able to get us in.The escape room itself was incredibly fun and immersive. I don’t want to give away spoilers, but I loved how each area led into another in such creative ways. There were moments where hidden doors or walls would suddenly open and it honestly blew my mind. The transitions between rooms were integrated so naturally into the scene that it made the whole experience even more exciting.Highly recommend this as an activity at Foxwoods — honestly some of the best money we spent there. It was well worth the price and we already want to go back and try the other room!

I scheduled a private group for next day and paid for it only to find out that they booked me public and my group had to go with random ppl. It was a big group already so adding more ppl felt like over doing it. They tried to have us reschedule for next day, even tho we booked this time prior to coming. It was giving, catering to the walk ins. It was an alright experience, but honestly I feel they need to really make sure everyone's on the same page before booking it. Not worth the money I spent here for all that trouble.

The actual game and room were good for aftermath. The issue was sharing the room and game with strangers. We went with a group of 5 people, two of which were teenagers. The remaining three spots were occupied by a group that obviously plays escape rooms often and more or less ruined the experience for us. Not because they were rude or anything like that. They just tried to take lead on everything and definitely turned some of us off. For the high prices they charge, you should be able to have a room for your group without having to pay even more for a private experience. I would never go back again unless it was with a full group of 8 people that I invited.

5 ladies ranging from early 20’s to early 70’s (3 of us being beginners)…we had a “blast”! Daniel was our host. He entertained us, probably as much as we entertained him.It was such a fun time, we would love to do it again.

I had so much fun with my friends! We did the aftermath room which was fun and multilayered. Each room increased in difficulty but we made it out with 0:59 seconds to spare so super rewarding! I would highly recommend and the workers were very nice.
